Building Creative Communities Conference Keynote Introduction #2

Andrew Hurley, PhD, will be the keynote speaker at lunch on Wednesday, November 12th. His topic will be “Putting the History Back Into Historic Preservation.”

Dr. Hurley is a Professor of History at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where he teaches Twentieth-Century United States History, urban history, environmental history, public history, and consumer culture.

His most recent book, Beyond Preservation: Using Public History to Revitalize Inner-Cities, was given the National Council on Public History Best Book Award in 2010. He has authored Diners, Bowling Alleys, and Trailer Parks: Chasing the American Dream in Postwar Consumer Culture, and Environmental Inequalities: Class, Race, and Industrial Pollution in Gary, Indiana 1945-1980.

Dr. Hurley has lectured nationally and internationally, and participated in urban development and outreach such as “The Virtual City Project” funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
