Artists and arts organizations are increasingly playing an important role in the development of local communities. In this session, members of the Stories of Route 66 project taking place in the International District in Albuquerque and led by community arts organization Littleglobe will share their experience of creating and sustaining a large scale community project with multiple partners. The session will directly engage the participants and provide a hands-on learning experience.
The Stories of Route 66: The International District project engages residents of Albuquerque’s International District in storytelling, art and design, transforming public spaces as well as designing a permanent “story plaza” to be built along the Route 66/Central Avenue corridor. At the heart of the project is a story-building process–rooted in the individual lives, cultures and histories of district residents, as well as the history of the land itself. The project is funded in part by a $150,000 National Endowment for the Arts Our Town grant and is a partnership of Littleglobe, City of Albuquerque Cultural Services Department, UNM Architecture Department, Story of Place Lab, UNM Arts Lab, PB & J Family Services, Albuquerque Metropolitan Arroyo Flood Control Authority, International District Healthy Communities Coalition, and State Senator Tim Keller.
